Gobble, Gobble! Did you know that it is a myth that all turkeys gobble? It is totally a guy thing – only toms gobble. The female hens only make clicking sounds. Talking turkey always makes us hungry, which leads us to an observation: Thanksgiving is a holiday centered around our two favorite things - food and rest! Well, Hampton Roads will provide you with both as you set in to enjoy your Thanksgiving Holiday.
At the Jamestown Settlement in Williamsburg, you can explore the 17th and 18th-century culinary practices of Virginia during the Foods and Feasts of Colonial Virginia. The three-day event begins on Thanksgiving Day. You can learn how food was gathered, preserved, and prepared on land and at sea by colonists and Powhatan Indians. While in the area, why not stop by the Yorktown Victory Center and learn about soldiers’ food fare during the Revolution? You will see how they trapped, prepared, and got the bounty from the farm field to the war field. Location: Jamestown Settlement, Yorktown Victory Center, Williamsburg. Time: November 22-25, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Fee: Admission Fee. Contact: 253-4838 or http://www.historyisfun.org/
In Norfolk, you could make reservations and enjoy being treated to sumptuous seafood Thanksgiving dinner at the Harbor Club, a riverfront restaurant specializing in local seafood (including a 2 and 1/2 pound lobster tail) and top quality beef. Why not take the day off and watch the ships roll by as you dine out? Location: 1 Commercial Place, Norfolk. Contact: 627-0671, reservations recommended.
While you have the time off, why not indulge your artistic side and visit Cinema Café Art? As a unique alternative to the common movie house, the Cinema Cafe Art House is a first-run movie theater specializing in independent art films, foreign films, classic revivals, documentary features and children’s entertainment. But wait –there’s more! You can also enjoy delicious dining along with the feature films. A truly terrific pairing of food and entertainment! Location: 758 Independence Blvd., Virginia Beach. When giving thanks for your own blessings, why not help out those less fortunate? The Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia is having its annual Mayflower Marathon on November 17-19. 106.9 The Fox will be deejaying and there will be attractions for the kiddos! For 53 hours, food and funds will be collected to provide the Thanksgiving dinners that the Food bank of Southeastern Virginia gives out. Location: The Original Mattress Factory, 3750 Virginia Beach Blvd. Contact: http://www.foodbankonline.org/special_events.html
If you skew towards the literary side why not visit the 20th Annual Hampton Roads African Heritage Book Expo? This year’s theme will be the writing of poetry and prose as an act of freedom. Additionally, there will be African storytelling for children, parents and teachers; read-aloud techniques and strategies in the home for parents; how to publish your own book; Poetry Slam; selecting and evaluating African heritage children’s books; homeopathic herbal remedies; newspapers and magazines in media promotion; and book talks by published authors. A wonderful way to celebrate both diversity and education! Location: Waterside Marriott Hotel, 235 East Main Street, Norfolk. Time: Sunday, November 25, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Contact: 547-5542 or http://www.kwamealexander.com/expo.htm
