If you are in the Virginia Beach area you could visit the 24th Annual Pungo Strawberry Festival where there are strawberries prepared in over 50 different ways for the diner’s delight. A pie-eating contest is the highlight of the afternoon. There are also car exhibits, an excellent carnival, a military display, arts and crafts, and a livestock sale and show. Also in the Virginia Beach area is the Remember the Music-Remember the Heroes Memorial Weekend concert. As a special tribute to our military heroes, armed forces bands will perform throughout the weekend on the oceanfront. Local high school students will have their essays featured on the Heroes Walk, a walking history display of our military’s proud traditions of honor, courage, and commitment. For the sports lovers in the family, Virginia Beach is also hosting a Memorial Day Soccerfest. Registration is at the Holiday Inn Executive Center from 5:00 pm. – 10:00 p.m. on Friday night. If you are going to be down in Portsmouth, you could see its annual Memorial Day Rembrance and Parade, a city tradition since 1884. This particular Memorial Day event has the distinction of being the nation’s oldest Memorial Day Parade and is in its 123rd year. Anyone wanting to visit Colonial Williamsburg should definitely include their Memorial Day Commemorative Program. The service honors our nation’s military by placing wreaths on grave sites of those who died in the American Revolution and the Civil War. There is also recognition for those service members who died in service during the 20th and 21st century. Drums will accompany the procession. After the program enjoy the rest Williamsburg has to offer including history tours, fine dining, and boutique and Outlet shopping! Located at Colonial Williamsburg. In the Newport News area, the Virginia War Museum is hosting its annual Victory Arch Memorial Day Ceremony. The ceremony is sponsored by the American Legion, Braxton-Perkins Post #25 and pays tribute to our nation’s rich military heritage. Also in the Newport News area, Riverwalk Landing in Yorktown is hosting its annual Memorial Day Weekend festivities. The Virginia Symphony Brass Ensemble Concert will perform on Friday evening. Saturday’s features include face painting, a car show, more music, and an evening movie (Grease). Sunday will have more music and entertainment and Monday visitors will enjoy a performance by the U.S. Fleet Forces Band. Located at Riverwalk Landing, 425 Water Street in Yorktown.
