Portsmouth Navy Shipyard History
Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is the oldest shyipyard operated by the US. The shipyard was established in 1800 by a grant from President Jefferson and has continued to serve the nation since then. The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard served a critical role producing ships and submarines through out world war one and World war two. Its largest change though was in the 1950’s when it was overhauled to handle nuclear powered submarines. Since then it has been an important shipyard in the maintenance of the navy’s nuclear fleet.
