I remember FM radio years ago as a place where there were very few commercials, the dj’s were knowlegable about the music they were playing and the playlists were very diverse. It wasn’t uncommon for a station to have hard rock, r&b and soul music in their rotations. With the consolidation of commercial radio in the last several years, we have seen a contraction of station formats and playlists. Fortunately, several radio stations are going back to the roots of FM radio. This backlash against the homogenous has created a ratings bonanza for these stations that try this “neo format.” Radio stations, KQMT Denver and KBZT San Diego have nearly doubled ratings in the last several years.
