Neo Radio
I remember FM radio years ago as a place where there were very few commercials, the dj’s were knowlegable about the music they were playing and the playlists were very diverse. It wasn’t uncommon for a station to have hard rock, r&b and soul music in their rotations. With the consolidation of commercial radio in the last several years, we have seen a contraction of station formats and playlists. Fortunately, several radio stations are going back to the roots of FM radio. This backlash against the homogenous has created a ratings bonanza for these stations that try this “neo format.” Radio stations, KQMT Denver and KBZT San Diego have nearly doubled ratings in the last several years. They both feature fewer commercials and knowlegable djs and an ecclectic playlist. Go to NPR’s All Things Considered and listen to the story.
